Iconic Looks of the Decade

Lady Gaga Meat Dress: I just want to start by saying that this dress is so iconic that it has its own Wikipedia page dedicated to it. Way back in 2010, Lady Gaga attended the MTV VMAs dressed head to toe in raw flank steak and obviously this dress created a massive up raw and disgust with the vegetarian and vegan community. Though at first, this just seemed like another one of Gaga’s OTT and showstopping gowns, it actually

had a big political meaning behind it. The star says the look referred to a speech she made, The Prime Rib of America, which urged the US military not to discriminate against gay men and lesbians from serving in the army. She says that the law prevents the military from enjoying "the greatest cut of meat my country has to offer". For me loved the shocking look and how she mixed the harsh, rawness of the meat with beautiful and delicate diamonds.

The Royal Wedding: In late April of 2011 Prince William married Kate Middleton in the wedding of the decade (Apart from Meghan and Harry’s in 2018). Designed by Sarah Burton, creative director of the luxury fashion house Alexander McQueen, it is said that Middleton chose the British brand Alexander McQueen for the beauty of its craftsmanship and its respect for traditional workmanship and the technical construction of clothing, Middleton wished for her dress to combine tradition and modernity with the artistic vision that characterizes Alexander McQueen’s work. She looked stunning in the long sleeved, laced dress finished with a nine feet long train. And is it even a conversation about the royal wedding without mentioning Pippa Middleton in her bridesmaid’s dress.

Supermodel of the Olympics: I’m never fully interested in the Olympics when it comes around, however back in 2012 the Olympics were held in London, making it extremely hard to avoid as it was plastered everywhere in the UK. But 2012’s closing ceremony seemed to be tailor-made for a fashion fan like myself: There was a Spice Girls cameo, an Alexander McQueen tribute and then something that blew my mind: a British-supermodel tribute including the likes of Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell, Lily Donaldson, Georgia May Jagger, Jourdan Dunn, Lily Cole, Karen Elson and Stella Tennant, all came strutting out to David Bowies ‘Fashion’ in gowns by legendary British designers Alexander McQueen, Burberry and Christopher Kane.

Jennifer Lawrence Oscar Dress: it wasn’t just the dress that was iconic about the Oscars for J Law but her whole acceptance of her Oscar was one for the books. Being the face of ‘Miss Dior’ J Law wore one of Raf Simons' designs which was one of the finale dresses from his recent Christian Dior Couture collection. I absolutely adore the shape and cut of this dress and I feel as though J Law looked stunning in it paired with minimal jewellery and an effortlessly done, up do.

Rhianna Swarovski Dress: In 2014 Rhianna attended the annual CFDA Fashion Awards and shocked the carpet in a sheer Swarovski-crystal-encrusted Adam Selman gown. With only a nude thong underneath, this dress has been dubbed the naked dress of the decade. The iridescent crystals made the dress move like liquid.

Rihanna Met Gala Gown: Back in 2015 Rhianna hit the nail on the head with the Met Gala theme (like every year) of ‘China: Through the Looking Glass’ in a Guo Pei Chinese couture gown. The gown, which took two years to make by one woman, was in an imperial yellow with a fur-trimmed cape that was embroidered with scrolls and scrolls of flora and then topped with a headpiece. When asked on the dress Pei stated, “The focus and the attention paid to this dress will make it remembered by the world – I want is to make them remembered… It is my responsibility to let the world know China’s tradition and past, and to give the splendour of China new expression. I hope that people do know China in this way.”

Claire Danes Cinderella Dress Met Gala: The actress made a show stopping entrance in a whimsical sky-blue ball gown created by her long-time friend Zac Posen. The one-of-a-kind, hand-sewn creation was crafted from organza ad fibre optics, which allowed the dress to light up in the dark. The high-tech garment definitely fit perfectly with the theme of 'Manus X Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology', with Posen even labelling it as a ‘Galactic Cinderella moment’. Danes certainly fulfilled every girl’s fairy-princess moment.

Rhianna Met Gala Gown: With the risk of sounding like a broken record, for 2017 I have to mention Rhianna for yet again another one of her Met Gala looks. With the theme of ‘Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between’ Rhianna was lucky enough to be able to wear a Comme des Garçons garment to the vent. This look is a quintessential Comme des Garçons creation, a subversion and exaggeration of a classic silhouette that defines all perceptions of proportion. But of course, Rhianna made it her own, paring the piece with lace up heels that covey her signature sex appeal. Like usual, Rhianna pulled off all the stops by being one of the very few who actually stuck with the Gala’s theme.

Golden Globes Black Out: 2017 was the year politics and fashion really came together. Most noticeably with the wake of the #MeToo in Hollywood. The year always starts up with a major focus on the red carpet, front-loaded by awards-show season. So in 2018 at the Golden Globes, attendees planned a fashion blackout, using this as a platform to speak out about sexual harassment while standing in solidarity with survivors. The carpet at the golden globes was smothered in gorgeous black gowns worn by hundreds of females in film - actresses, directors, producers and agents.

Lady gaga Met Gala Red Carpet Performance: To end this decade of iconic looks, it only felt right to finish how I started it, with Lady Gaga and her Met Gala extravaganza. Nothing screams camp more than a red-carpet performance by Lady Gaga with four costume changes. All four outfits were designed by Brandon Maxwell and were inspired by Susan Sontag's 1964 essay that defines camp as "love of the unnatural: of artifice and exaggeration.". Starting off with a hot pink gown in which Gaga wore posing underneath a parade of black umbrellas. Then Gaga removed her cape to reveal my personal favourite look out of the four, an all-black ensemble with a dramatic puff on the hip. Then, there was another hot pink gown complete with a giant black cell phone bag by Judith Leiber. And last but not least, she then proceeded to strip down to her bra, fishnets, and underwear while pulling a hot pink wagon full of rosé and pink cowboy hats.
