The Academy Awards: The Winners of the Red Carpet

Updated: May 18, 2021

Penelope Cruz: Cruz arrived in a custom-made Chanel gown made of black silk. Inspired by the SS 1995 Haute Couture collection, the bustier bodice held up by a halter top ended in a bow and a white camellia, which is synonymous with Chanel, completed with a string of pearls around her waist. However, the best part of the dress for me is the drop waist and the voluminous balloon skirt. Though she kept it simple with an LDB, I think It had a big pay off as she looked gorgeous and sophisticated.

Scarlett Johansson: Nominated for a whopping 2 awards she defiantly dressed for the occasion. Wearing a custom metallic Oscar De La Renta down and then enhanced with $2.5 million worth of diamonds. The heavily embellished structured bodice draped in metallic thread paired with the neural toned silk skirt worked well together to balance the look. Though she didn’t win in either category, she defiantly won on the red carpet.

Margot Robbie: In true Robbie style, she turned up in Chanel. The vintage couture gown was an effortlessly stunning off-shoulder, midnight chiffon gown. The vintage 90’s nostalgia cannot not be missed with the flowing, chiffon armbands complete with Chanel bows. The focal point of the dress however, was the blue pendant which was surrounded by other sparkling gems and pearls. This stunning piece of embellishment meant a lack of accessories, which I think was a good choice. Though not to everyone’s taste, it defiantly took my fancy.

Rooney Mara: Known for her gothic-luxe looks, Mara wore an Alexander McQueen cut out lace gown with puff sleeves and a ruffled skirt from the SS 2016 collection, when accompanying her fiancé Joaquin Phoenix. Though this is my 3rd LBD contender, I couldn’t leave this one out. The sheer black lace mixed with her porcelain skin and deep and daring cut outs called for a sexy yet romantic interpretation of the classic LBD.

Léa Seydoux: Taking a fresh and woke approach on red carpet fashion, Seydoux had sustainability in mind for her custom black-and-white Louis Vuitton gown, which was made of Tencel Luxe material and organic silk faille. Once again love the dropped waist as I can appreciate anyone who can successfully pull it off. I also love the contrasting black rim of the dress as I feel as though it creates sophistication. All and all I think the idea of wearing and ethical and eco friendly gown on such an infamous red carpet was a fresh idea that I think was very much appreciated.

Emily Ratajkowski: Though she didn’t actually attend the actual ceremony, I couldn’t leave her out. At the Vanity Fair after party, Ratajkowski turned up in a seamless white bandeau top and matching skirt exposing her incredibly toned midriff. I mean kudos to her for pulling off one of the most daring Oscars look yet (obviously joint with Cher’s 1986 Oscars appearance). Wearing a custom look by her own Inamorata clothing line I truly think she shut down the red carpet and dropped many jaws.
