Leather: Once reserved strictly for fall and winter, leather is ready to have its moment during spring too. The material was spotted on spring 2020 runways from New York to Paris in just about every form, not only is 2020 the year of the leather (and faux leather, of course!), but it’s the year of the colourful and punchy leather look. We typically reach for basic black or brown when it comes to leather goods, but Rochas, Bottega Veneta, coach and others are encouraging you to get colourful. Designers offered a rainbow's worth of buttery leather in hot pinks, Kelly greens, and more bright ideas.

Crochet: There is a renewed focus on handcrafted pieces this season, with designers working in artisanal motifs including fabric mixing, lace embroidery and intricate knitwear, especially with an emphasis on crochet. Crochet is getting a cool update come spring. Think ultra-feminine dresses, polished suiting, and eveningwear that feels modern with a special touch of Grandma’s handmade crochet. As the fashion industry looks for ways to become more sustainable, there’s something special about a “trend” that embraces a slow, handmade technique that can be passed down generation after generation. Brands like Marni, Fendi and Kate Spade elevated the grandma textile in the form of chic maxi dresses and fringed capes, bringing you into the year 2020.

Feathers: When it comes to eveningwear, as much as the world is wont to convince you, sometimes a little black dress just won’t do. Ostrich feathers will give your ready to wear clothes a hint of couture craftsmanship like boldly feathered frocks and tops from Burberry, Valentino, Attico, and more. While almost certainly light as air, these ensembles pack a heavy sartorial punch.

Metallics: All kinds of metallics and shiny fabrics graced the Spring/Summer 2020 runways, so you’re sure to see a lot of this trend in the new year. From trenches, across trousers, and even splashed all over bags, metallic hues (more specifically silvers) were everywhere on the SS20 catwalk. Designers paired sequins, metallics and glitter with simple silhouettes, creating understated, yet bold looks that offered effortless ways to do high-shine wear. Eckhaus Latta proved sequins can be minimalist by presenting casual slip dresses in cobalt blue or tangerine. Other designer brands, such as Simone Rocha, Ralph Lauren and Saint Laurent followed suit, using sequins to bring drama to otherwise classic pieces.
